This class is designed for electricians, technicians, engineers, solar installers, sales people and those with a basic understanding of electrical theory and electrical terminology, who wish to understand how to design and evaluate the performance of battery based solar electric systems.

Topics may include the following:

  • Tesla PowerWall with Fronius, SMA and Solar-Edge/Stor-Edge
  • AC Coupling to XW and Sunny Island
  • DC Coupling with PWM and 150 V, 250 V and 600 V MPPT controllers
  • Off-grid with Schneider, Sunny Island, Outback and Magnum
  • Li-Ion Batteries, Sodium Ion Batteries, Flooded and Sealed Lead-Acid
  • Battery Sizing
  • Battery Monitoring
  • Battery Maintenance
  • Batteries and Code
  • Generator selection and operation
  • Off-grid site assessment and clients

Participants are encouraged to bring copies of the current Canadian or Alberta Electrical Code. However, this is not required. Participants should dress warmly on Saturday for an outdoor component. PPE is not required.

Upon completion students will receive a Certificate of Completion from the Solar Energy Society of Alberta.

  • Saturday 8:30 am to 5:30 pm
  • Sunday 8:30 am to 5:30 pm

Instructor Information, Eric Smiley M.ASc., P.Eng.

Mr. Smiley is the principal of Reid Wylde Engineering Ltd. on Vancouver Island, a renewable energy engineering company, and a member of Viridian Energy Co-operative, a renewable energy workers’ co-operative. His academic experience includes coordinating the Green Building and Renewable Energy Technology Diploma Program at Vancouver Island University, instructing in the Alternative Energy Technology Program at NAIT and leading applied research projects in renewable energy at the BCIT Technology Center.

Mr. Smiley holds a Master’s Degree in energy system modelling and is a Field Safety Representative for Solar Photovoltaic in BC. He is registered as an Electrical Engineer in the Province of BC and has over 20 years of experience in residential and small commercial renewable energy system design and installation. Mr. Smiley continues to teach renewable energy and engineering courses for various organizations, including, Solar Energy Society of Alberta, NAIT, BCIT, North Island College, Solar Energy International and CanSIA. He is an associate of ASHRAE; former chair of the NABCEP Exam committee for Photovoltaic Installers; and former member of the CSA Section 50 sub-committee for the Canadian Electrical Code.

Available Funding for Course Costs

We would like to encourage participants in our PV System Design and Modelling Class to apply for the Canada-Alberta Job Grant (CAJG), which will cover up to two-thirds of the cost of the class for certain participants.

The Canada-Alberta Job Grant is an employer-driven training program. This means that employers decide on who gets training and what type of training may be needed for new and existing employees. Employers must use a third-party training provider to deliver the formal training either onsite, online, or in a classroom setting. Through the program, employers participate in the training decisions that will equip their current and future workers with the skills they need to fill available jobs. The grant supports new training initiatives not currently being used by employers.
