I’m mad as hell with the lack of leadership that our provincial government has demonstrated in seizing the opportunity to create renewable energy jobs in Alberta.

Countries like Germany, Italy, Spain, Denmark, the United States, China and others are focused on increasing their production of renewable energy as quickly as possible to provide a secure clean source of energy for their populations, and their industries. Germany for example, has created over 250,000 well paid green jobs.

In Canada, provinces like Ontario have committed to transitioning their energy production over to renewable energy. They estimate that they will create more than 50,000 well paid green jobs. A short time ago they announced that they have implemented enough renewable energy production since last summer that they now have the ability to turn off four coal fired electric generation plants. That will save their health care system a significant amount of money.

Meanwhile the government in Alberta, a province that has some of the best renewable energy resources available in Canada, and also better than many other parts of the world, is doing virtually nothing! The wind turbines in Alberta were implemented and paid for by private investors. The majority of the photovoltaic solar panels were paid for by private investors.

By the time our provincial government starts thinking about the opportunity that renewable energy creates, Ontario will already have kicked Alberta’s ass in building the infrastructure required to capitalize on the manufacturing opportunities. It’s too late for that now, but it’s not too late to get a better understanding of the benefits that renewable energy has to offer in helping to meet Alberta’s growing demand for electricity, and reducing our health care costs.

Apparently a growing number of the municipal governments in Alberta have requested that the provincial government establish a Renewal Power Expert Task Force, in order to get a better understanding where the opportunity lies, and to make informed decisions about how renewable energy fits into the mix. I suggest you listen to them.
