The Path To Energy Independence Reducing Our Footprint and Utility Bills A Seven-Week Evening Class What is the path to energy independence for the Alberta homeowner? What actually works in our climate? How can we reduce our footprint and be part of the solution? Is a solar system practical for me? Which efficiency improvements have the best payback? These and other questions will be addressed in this overview of renewable energy options.
Students will learn of practical things that can be done now. Meters will be made available to measure the consumption of household appliances. Solar equipment will be demonstrated. The class will explore the world of generating electricity from solar and wind, solar water heating for homes, hot tubs and pools, as well as, passive solar building design. Green transportation options will be covered. Students will receive a list of the best websites, local resources, and a Grant MacEwan Institute of Environmental Studies certificate of completion. The class includes a Saturday tour of commercial solar installations in the Edmonton area. The course will be taught by Rob Harlan with additional guest instructors Andy Smith of Sol North Engineering and Bruce Ganske of Sol Source.

The Instructor Rob Harlan Rob Harlan is the Executive Director of the Solar Energy Society of Alberta and a member of the Edmonton Renewable Energy Task Force. Mr. Harlan is a Solar Contractor and General Building Contractor with ten years experience designing and installing over 150 solar electric and solar hot water installations in California. As a general building contractor he designed and built energy-efficient, passive solar homes. He is certified by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners and has taught workshops and classes in solar technologies in the United States and Canada. Mr. Harlan has also lived for twenty-five years in an off-grid house powered and heated by the sun.
